Twenty20 format offers batsmen a unique opportunity to let loose and perform explosive feats. Some batsmen have particularly enjoyed great innings in IPL T20 matches. Here we've listed out the top 10 highest-scoring batsmen in IPL till now:
Chris Gayle:
At 175 not out for just 66 balls, Chris Gayle is the highest-scoring batsman in IPL history. The West Indies' left-handed batsman is regarded as the greatest batsman ever to have played T20 cricket. Gayle made the record as a part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore against Sahara Pune Warriors at Bangalore's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in IPL 2013. 13 fours and 17 sixes powered his batting run.
Brendon McCullum:
Brendon McCullum shined brightly on IPL's opening night, making a record 158 runs off 73 balls for the Kolkata Knight Riders, defeating the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2008. His batting run in the match constituted 10 fours and 13 sixes, making him the second-highest scorer in IPL history. He won the Player of the Match honour as KKR defeated RCB by a record 140 runs.
Quinton de Kock:
Lucknow Super Giants opener Quinton de Kock smashed 140 runs off of just 70 balls as one of the most destructive knocks of IPL in 2022, becoming the third-highest scorer in IPL history. Thanks to his immense contribution of 10 sixes and 10 fours on a slow batting pitch, LSG amassed 210 runs against KKR, as they ultimately defeated them by 2 runs. His most successful spell in the match came in the final 2 overs, where he smashed 3 sixes and a boundary against Tim Southee in the 19th over and then 4 successive boundaries against Andre Russell.
AB de Villiers:
In 2015, AB de Villiers went on a rampage against the Mumbai Indians, scoring 133 runs off 59 balls, including 19 fours and 4 sixes, becoming the fourth-highest scorer in IPL. He easily smashed bowlers like Malinga, Bumrah, McClenaghan and Harbhajan Singh as he helped RCB mount 235 runs. By the end of his run, even the MI fans had started cheering for him. In the end, RCB won the match by 39 runs.
KL Rahul:
Kings XI Punjab captain KL Rahul became the fifth-highest scorer in IPL when he led his team to a win against RCB in 2020 by scoring 132 runs off in 69 balls with 14 fours and 7 sixes. RCB made the mistake of dropping him twice in the match, and he made them regret those dropped catches as much as he could. After the second drop, he went 6,4,6,6,4 against Steyn and 4,6,6 against Dube, capping the innings for Kings XI. He even snatched the orange cap by becoming the tournament's leading run-scorer.
AB de Villiers:
ABD entered the list again in 2016 as the sixth-highest scorer in IPL history with a fantastic knock of 129 runs for 52 balls against Gujarat Lions with the help of his 10 fours and 12 sixes. Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers put up a partnership of 200+ runs, helping RCB's total reach 248 runs. The Lions had no hope of winning against this staggering total and ended up losing by 144 runs.
Shubman Gill:
Shubman Gill's 129 knock against the Mumbai Indians in the 2nd qualifier match in the IPL 2023 playoffs not only propelled the Gujarat Titans to the finals but also solidified his claim on the Orange Cap for the season. Gill was unstoppable, especially in the second half of his innings, as it took only 32 balls for his first 50 and then 19 for his second one. His batting run included 7 fours and 10 sixes, making him the seventh-highest scorer in IPL history.
Chris Gayle:
RCB desperately needed a win against the Delhi Daredevils in IPL 2012 to score a playoff spot, and Chris Gayle delivered. Gayle and Kohli partnered up to help the team score 215 runs. His explosive batting run didn't stop till the end of the innings with 7 fours and 13 sixes, totalling 128 runs off 62 deliveries, making him the eighth-highest scorer in IPL.
Rishabh Pant:
Shikhar Dhawan may have been the Player of the Match after Sunrisers Hyderabad's win against the Delhi Daredevils in 2018, but the most impressive knock of the match came from Rishabh Pant, the ninth-highest scorer in IPL history. Pant scored 128 runs off just 63 balls on a typically slow Feroz Shah Kotla pitch. He took on the Sunrisers team of bowlers like a lone warrior but could not guarantee a victory.
Murali Vijay:
Last on this list is Murali Vijay's memorable 127 knockoff 56 deliveries for Chennai Super Kings against Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2010. Entering the pitch as an opener, he smashed 8 fours and 11 sixes and helped propel CSK to a winning total of 246/5. It is still the highest score by a CSK player in the IPL and the tenth-highest score in IPL overall.
