Rohit vs Virat INTERNATIONAL CAREERS
Rohit Sharma made his international debut in an ODI in Ireland against the home team on June 23, 2007.
Kohli, on the other hand, first came into the limelight with the 2008 ICC Under-19 World Cup where he led India to the title. His debut in international cricket occurred on August 18, 2008 - against Sri Lanka in an ODI at Dambulla.
Kohli suffered a setback when he got dropped after his maiden series. In 2009, he returned to the Indian team and got his maiden international century, against Sri Lanka, later that year.
For Rohit, it was a tougher ride. He kept moving in and out of the Indian team until 2013. In January that year, he was promoted to the opening position in the ODI series against England. That’s when Rohit’s career fully took off.
Virat kohli vs Rohit sharma statistics
Let’s look at the overall stats of these two modern-day greats:
In Test Matches
Virat got promoted to Test cricket in 2011, but was soon dropped. The Delhi batsman made a comeback soon and established himself in the side during the 2011/12 tour to Australia. He scored his maiden Test hundred in the Adelaide Test of that series.
Rohit’s journey was more difficult. Due to inconsistent form and injuries, he had to wait much longer for his Test debut.
Despite scoring centuries in both his first two Tests, against West Indies at home in 2013, he couldn’t hold on to his place. Just like ODI cricket, it was his promotion to opener’s slot - in 2019 - that made him a leading member of the team.
In ODIs
Kohli is considered an all-time great in this format of the game. But the same can be said about Rohit as well. While Kohli has stacked up 43 hundreds already in ODIs, Sharma has left him behind by making double hundreds.
Not only has Sharma scored three double centuries in ODIs, but he has also scored the highest score ever in ODI - 264.
In T20I
Like in the ODI format, Rohit and Virat are two of the all-time greats in the T20 version. Rohit got his first opportunity to play T20I cricket in 2007. His debut was against England at Durban on September 19.
Kohli got his first T20 international cap in 2010 against Zimbabwe at Harare on June 12. While Virat’s average in this format is also above Rohit’s, the latter has the lead when it comes to centuries. While Rohit has four hundreds under his belt, Kohli is yet to get his first.
Virat vs Rohit in IPL
Both players have been playing in the IPL since its inaugural season in 2008. Both have been captains of their respective teams for a very long time. Unlike T20 internationals, Virat has scored five hundreds in IPL. Rohit has had just one so far. Also, Virat is the leading run-getter in IPL history at the moment.
Batting Style
Virat Kohli is a flamboyant stroke maker blessed with the gift of great timing. Like most Indian batsmen, he has impressive wristwork and is devastating against anything even marginally on the legs. He is equally lethal against short and full deliveries and plays the hook and pull very well. His only weakness seems to be deliveries on the ‘fifth-stump line’.
Rohit is an elegant batsman who makes batting look quite effortless. He may appear laidback in his style due to this quality. His superb sense of timing has made him a delight to watch. He has developed the ability to hit really big shots and displayed that in abundance when he scored his ODI double hundreds.
Rohit sharma vs Virat kohli captaincy record
In international cricket, Kohli became India’s full-time Test captain during the tour of Australia in 2014-15 after Dhoni retired abruptly. He took over the skipper’s role in the other formats in 2017.
Rohit had been leading the Indian ODI and T20I teams since then in Kohli’s absence. Now, he will be the full-time captain.
Captaincy Record in ODIs
Captaincy Record in T20Is
Captaincy Record in IPL
Virat became the captain of RCB in 2013. But the team has consistently underperformed during his tenure. The only exception was the 2016 season where they reached the finals.
Rohit also became an IPL captain - of Mumbai Indians - in 2013. He has been immensely successful, having led his team to five IPL wins.
What to Expect From Virat & Rohit in 2022
2022 will be a crucial year for both these legends of Indian cricket. Virat will need to end the drought of hundreds that has been plaguing him in international cricket for the last two years. His overall record in Tests in this period has been disappointing.
With captaincy no longer on his shoulders, it would be interesting to see whether we will see him playing with a lot more freedom. On the technical front, his weakness of getting out while attempting a cover drive needs to be overcome.
For Rohit, this year will show whether he can replicate his IPL captaincy success on the international stage. His biggest test will be the
T20 World Cup.
Rohit will be expected to continue his good batting form in tests. Having succeeded in England, he has proved himself to be a capable batsman in all conditions.
